The Faith of Abraham

Abraham is a central character in the Bible.  The New Testament writers repeatedly hold up Abraham as the type of faith people are to possess today.  But what was so significant about Abraham's faith?  Why is his faith worthy of my repetition?  And how does Abraham's justification, taking place long before Christ's death on the cross, have any relation to my justification today?
